With counterflow configuration, hot water is pumped to the fill’s top, and pipes/nozzles distribute the water across the fill. A fan draws water in the opposite direction of the water flow, thus the term “counterflow.”
This contrasts with the crossflow combination in which gravity pulls water downward through the fill. The fan, located between the two sections of fill, draws the outside air through the fill horizontally before pushing it upward, creating a perpendicular flow of air and water (crossflow).
