For those not familiar with the HVAC world, a cooling tower might seem like a structure filled with water that moderates temperature. Though water is a key component of your cooling tower application, it’s really the evaporative process that makes the magic happen. Evaporative cooling allows a portion of the water being cooled to evaporate into a flowing air stream, resulting in a major increase in cooling. So, the name of the game is evaporation. Cooling Tower Fill Media Explained
Cooling tower fill media significantly increases the surface area within the tower. The increased surface area allows for greater evaporation rates, which in turn means better cooling. There are two main types of fill – splash, and film. Splash fill is designed to interrupt water flow and cause “splashing,” while film fill is designed for water to flow across. Fill usually features patterns and ridges, called “flutes” or “channels,” which further efficiency as they force the water to take the longest route possible during the process.
