A Rundown

A fan coil unit is an application that uses a coil and a fan to heat or cool a room without connecting to ductwork. To start this unit and keep it running optimally, capacitors are required.

A capacitor is a shiny, cylinder-shaped battery that resembles a can. They are responsible for powering the system’s motors and stabilizing the voltage that runs through your HVAC system. Your outdoor fan, motors compressor, and blower should have their own set of them to start the motor and keep it going. There are two main types of capacitors – “start” and “run” capacitors. The start ones are used to – you guessed it – start the unit while “run” capacitors have the role of producing and stabilizing energy to keep it running.

We Know What You’re Thinking… So Capacitors Are Just Batteries?

They function similar to and resemble batteries, however, they are different. Batteries store energy chemically, while capacitors store physical energy that resembles static electricity. The process of replacing this device is also a bit more technical than simply replacing a battery, as these high voltage devices are connected to wiring within the system. A technician should absolutely be called to replace one, as replacement with no experience or training can result in injury. For more information on their differences, check out here.

At Commercial HVAC Parts, we supply a large variety of “run” capacitors. To view our current stock, click here.

What Are Fan Sheaves?

Fan sheaves are belt-driven power transmission devices designed to rotate. This rotation moves force from one shaft to another when connected with a belt.

These sheaves, which are the grooved wheel in the parts of a pulley system, are used to power fans, pumps, conveyors, and so forth. The belt fits inside the grooved part of this wheel and creates tension. Idlers are used to reduce slippage, move belts away from complications that can disrupt its rotation, and aid with creating and maintaining tension.

What’s the Maintenance?

Like other parts of your cooling tower application, sheaves are subjected to regular wear and tear over time. When this part wears, it is often in your best interest to replace the sheaves rather than attempting to adjust them or fix them. When replacing your sheaves, make sure to use the same diameter and count the number of turns “in” from the edge or edges on the old one and do the same on the new. For more information on fan sheaves and the replacement process, check out here.

The Importance of Fan Shaft Bearings

Cooling towers are created for a specific purpose – to counteract heat in commercial environments. That seems simple enough, however, there are a variety of mechanics and parts that go into making your cooling tower function… And function at peak performance at that.

The inside of the cooling tower is a hot and moist environment where internal parts are consistently exposed to harsh conditions. Proper maintenance and upkeep are critical in ensuring those parts don’t get damaged or degrade. It’s safe to say everyone wants a sound return on their investment, and the best way to keep your cooling tower effectively running is to ensure it is well maintained.

Fan shaft bearings are a component of the cooling tower that is always exposed to that tough environment previously stated. Bearings are essential in bringing about the movement of fans in a cooling tower. The fans help force air to flow through the tower.

Fan Shaft Bearing Maintenance

With fan shaft bearings, you want to prevent:

  • additional downtime and suffer a loss of production
  • the collateral damage of your fan shaft, propeller, and other drive components
  • higher cost because of frequent replacement or service works on your cooling tower

BAC uses specially engineered and tested bearings to meet the rigorous BAC standards. Provided installation and lubrification are done as per BAC operating & maintenance instructions, you can bet on enjoying guaranteed year-round reliable operation. Lubricating or greasing the bearings in your cooling tower application is important, and BAC bearings have grease that outperforms most common available greases. This ensures an extended grease life and better rust resistance.

BAC bearings have unique specifications thanks to joint development with their bearing manufacturer. For more information on BAC bearings, check out here.

What Do Float Valves Do?

Float valves are used in a variety of ways for a variety of things! They are simple mechanical liquid-level controllers. A float will detect a change in elevation of the liquid free-surface and therefore open or close the valve accordingly. The float valve maintains the water level in the cold water header tank which regulates the pressure of the hot water system.

To put it short, float valves maintain water levels within your cooling tower application. For more in depth information on the science of float valves, check out here!

Why Are Float Valves Important?

A float valve that isn’t functioning properly can cause your cooling tower to overflow and not work properly. If the pressure of the water is greater than the bouyant force of the valve, it can cause the ball or pan float to be forced down. This will result in the cold water basin flooding.

At Commercial HVAC Parts, we offer float valve kits that are compatible for your BAC (Baltimore Air Coil), Marley (SPX), and Evapco (Reymsa) applications. We’ll make sure you get the correct one! We offer “long” and “short” dual-rod assembly valve kits with both pan floats and ball floats. Our valve kits will meet the dimensions required for your application, and boast a long lifespan with little maintenance. To check out our available stock, click here.
