A Rundown
A fan coil unit is an application that uses a coil and a fan to heat or cool a room without connecting to ductwork. To start this unit and keep it running optimally, capacitors are required.
A capacitor is a shiny, cylinder-shaped battery that resembles a can. They are responsible for powering the system’s motors and stabilizing the voltage that runs through your HVAC system. Your outdoor fan, motors compressor, and blower should have their own set of them to start the motor and keep it going. There are two main types of capacitors – “start” and “run” capacitors. The start ones are used to – you guessed it – start the unit while “run” capacitors have the role of producing and stabilizing energy to keep it running.
We Know What You’re Thinking… So Capacitors Are Just Batteries?
They function similar to and resemble batteries, however, they are different. Batteries store energy chemically, while capacitors store physical energy that resembles static electricity. The process of replacing this device is also a bit more technical than simply replacing a battery, as these high voltage devices are connected to wiring within the system. A technician should absolutely be called to replace one, as replacement with no experience or training can result in injury. For more information on their differences, check out here.
