Much like a mechanical vibration cutoff switch, an electrical vibration cutoff switch is a safety feature used in the HVAC industry to protect against abnormal (excessive) vibration amplitude, much like an alarm trigger or failsafe override.
Yet there are differences between mechanical vibration cutoff switches and electrical vibration cutoff switches. According to SPX Cooling Technologies, “an electrical ions cutoff switch’s preset limit will trigger an alarm, alerting operators to inspect the cooling tower and shut it down before failure occurs. If vibration exceeds a second preset limit before operators manually shut down the tower, the switch triggers a solid-state relay for automatic shutdown. Both the mechanical and electronic switches typically are mounted on structural support beams. Alternately, the electronic switch offers an external accelerometer option which provides superior vibration measurement accuracy when mounted on the casing of the gearbox.”
